Your digital home: why Instagram isn't enough (and what happens when the algorithm flips) - an article by Tal Eckerling

Let's imagine a situation for a moment. You opened a gorgeous clothing store. You invested in the design, picked a killer collection, put a lit-up sign at the entrance. Customers start coming in, the register is ringing, and everything looks rosy. But there's one small catch. This store? It isn't yours. It's inside a huge mall, and the mall's owner is a bit... how should I put it... fickle.

One day he decides that from now on, the only way into your store is through the back storeroom. Another day he decides that from now on you can only show neon green items in the window, because that's what's "in" right now. And on the third day? On the third day he just decides to close your wing of the mall for renovations, without telling you in advance. Your customers arrive and find a locked door.

Sounds like a business nightmare, right?

So why do we do this to ourselves online?

The "rented apartment" trap Let's get practical. Most of your business today probably lives on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. And I understand why. It's easy, it's accessible, and everyone's there. You've spent years building a community, creating content, gathering followers. But the truth is, none of those "assets" are really yours. They're a rented apartment.

Mark Zuckerberg (or whoever is running TikTok these days) is the landlord. He's the one who sets the rules. And those rules? They change all the time.

What happens when the algorithm flips? You know how it goes. You upload a post you worked hard on for hours, and suddenly... nothing. Your reach drops off a cliff. Why? Because the algorithm decided that now it only promotes reels of dancing cats. Or worse, you wake up in the morning and find your account blocked, or hacked, or simply gone. Years of work down the drain in one moment.

That's not a horror script, it's the reality for thousands of business owners who wake up one morning to find the main tap of their business has been shut off, and there's nobody to talk to.

The fix: build a home of your own So what's the alternative? The alternative is to build yourself a real "digital home". An asset that's registered in your name. It can be two main things:

  1. A website of your own: the place where you set the rules. You decide how it looks, what content is on it, and the journey a client takes through it. Nobody can shut it down or hide it from you. It's your home.
  2. A mailing list (newsletter): the most important asset you have. A list of people who gave you their email and said "I want to hear from you". It's a direct, intimate line of communication that doesn't depend on any algorithm. Even if all the social networks crash tomorrow, your mailing list stays with you.

It's not "either-or", it's "both" I'm not telling you to abandon Instagram. Not at all. Social networks are great. They're the "town square" where you meet new people, make connections and build awareness. They're the party. But the point of the party isn't to keep people there forever. The point is to eventually invite them over to your place. For a cup of coffee. For a real conversation.

Smart marketing uses social networks as a bridge. A bridge that leads your audience from the noisy "rented apartment" to your quiet, stable "home".

The bottom line: building a whole business that rests only on someone else's platform is like building a sandcastle on the shore. It looks beautiful, but the first wave that comes in will wash it all away. Take control. Build yourself stable foundations. Because your business deserves a real home.
