Claude and Claude Code: what goes where

In this lesson you'll learn

  • What changed when Chat and Cowork merged
  • What the Claude app does today
  • When to move to Claude Code
  • Where to install

Claude stopped being just a chat a long time ago

I meet quite a few business owners who use Claude like Google: ask a question, get an answer, copy, paste. That's perfectly fine. But it's like buying an SUV and only ever driving it to the supermarket.

My favorite number: Anthropic analyzed 1.2 million Cowork work sessions from May 2026, and software development was only 8.7% of them. The biggest category, 33.4%, was operations and business processes (from the official Claude blog). In other words: your work.

And the good news: since September it's also much simpler to get started. In this lesson we'll sort it all out: what you do in the Claude app, what you do in Claude Code, and how to tell which one fits the task on your desk.

One Claude: what changed on September 16

Until September, Claude had two modes: Chat for conversation, and Cowork for working on files and tasks. You had to choose up front, and that was needless confusion right at the first step.

Since September 16, 2026, there's no choice to make. Chat and Cowork merged into one Claude: you open a conversation, ask, and Claude works out on its own what the task needs. Sometimes that's a short answer, sometimes a multi-step task on your files, and sometimes a document or a deck. And when the request isn't clear, it asks.

As of October 2026 this is a gradual rollout. Pro and Max subscribers get it first, in the browser, on desktop and on mobile. On the Team plan it's in beta, and on the no-cost plan it's coming "soon", according to Anthropic's announcement.

How do you know if you have it yet? Look at the message box. If it still shows the options "Chat" and "Cowork", the update hasn't reached your account yet. Keep working as usual. Your conversations, projects and settings come with you when it arrives.

What the Claude app does today

I split it into four verbs:

  • Talks. Drafting, brainstorming, questions, analyzing text you've pasted, and searching the web.
  • Works with your files and tools. Reads, edits and creates files in folders you've chosen, and connects through connectors (links to outside tools) to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive and more.
  • Runs tasks. Multi-step work from start to finish, which keeps running in the cloud even after you've closed your computer. You can schedule a task to repeat every week, and send a task off from your phone.
  • Makes documents, decks and designs. Right inside the conversation: Docs for documents, Slides for decks you can download as PowerPoint or PDF, and Design for visual work.

Two notes that save confusion. First, even the no-cost plan already includes conversation, file creation, memory, connectors, and Docs, Slides and Design. Delegating tasks and scheduling them are for paid plans. Second, tasks run in Anthropic's cloud, so folders on your computer are available to Claude only while the desktop app is open.

One more thing I want you to know right now: you decide how often Claude stops to ask you before it acts. We'll go deeper into that in stage 2, in the lesson on working safely.

And what is Claude Code?

Claude Code is the tool for building. It reads a whole project, edits files and runs commands. It was originally built for developers, but the cat has been out of the bag for a while: people who have never written a line of code use it to build websites, small business tools and automations.

You'll find it in the Code tab of the Claude desktop app, in the terminal, and in the browser at claude.ai/code. It needs a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.

The difference in one sentence: the app is your operations assistant, and Claude Code is your renovation contractor. Stronger, more flexible, and it needs a bit more of your hands on the wheel. We'll get to it in stage 3 of the course, and you don't need to know code to start.

What goes where: a decision table

Here are real tasks from a small business's everyday life, and where you do each one:

The task Where What happens there
"Draft me a reply to a client who asked for a discount" In the app An answer in the conversation, no files
"What do you think of this business idea?" In the app A thinking conversation
"Go through the 40 receipts in the folder and build an expense report" In the app, with the desktop app open A task on the files, and an Excel file at the end
"Prepare a briefing for tomorrow's meeting from my emails and calendar" In the app, with connectors Gathering from several sources, and a ready output
"Make a short deck for a client proposal" In the app A deck in Slides you can edit and download
"Every Sunday morning, sum up my week" In the app, as a scheduled task Runs on its own, without asking again
"Build me a landing page for a promotion and put it live" In Claude Code Building a digital asset
"Build me a price quote calculator for clients" In Claude Code A tool that works, not a document

My rule: if the result is an answer, a file or a document, it's the app. If the result is something other people will use, like a website or a tool, it's Claude Code.

And where do you download it? Claude works in the browser (claude.ai), in the app for Mac and Windows (and Linux, in beta), and on mobile for iPhone and Android. It's all on the official download page. It's worth installing the desktop app even if you're used to the browser, because only through it can Claude reach the folders on your computer.

Try it now

  1. Open a new conversation in Claude. Browser, desktop or mobile, it doesn't matter.
  2. Copy this prompt and fill in your field:
Ready prompt

"I run a small business in [your field]. Ask me five short questions about a normal work week for me, one at a time. Once I've answered, suggest three tasks you could take off my plate this week. For each task, tell me what you'd need from me (files, a connection to a tool, or just an explanation), and whether it's something for a conversation here or something to build in Claude Code."

  1. Answer honestly, even if the answer is "everything gets lost in my inbox".
  2. Pick one of the three tasks and set it aside. We'll work on it in the next lessons.

What to take from this

No more modes to choose: you open a conversation, ask, and Claude works out what the task needs. The app is the place for conversation, files, tasks and documents, and Claude Code is the place to build. And if your message box still shows "Chat" and "Cowork", it just hasn't reached your account yet.

This is the first of 16 lessons.
